Gas Pedal Recalls, Floor Mat Recalls & Toyota Class Action Lawsuits
There are a number of automotive defects that can cause or play a role in a vehicle accident, but if you or a loved one has sustained injuries or death resulting from a Toyota vehicle it is important that you discuss your case with an attorney. You may be eligible to seek compensation for your losses and suffering. Our lawyers will help you determine if sudden acceleration was the cause of your accident.
About sudden acceleration
Auto giant Toyota garnered harsh headlines beginning in Fall 2009, when accidents involving sudden acceleration and unintended acceleration in Toyota-manufactured vehicles began emerging. Then, in February 2010, Akio Toyoda, the president of Toyota, appeared at a House hearing into the company’s recalls of millions of cars—recalls for which he profusely apologized and took personal responsibility.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at least 1,000 incidents of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles occurred in the past eight years, along with scores of accidents and injuries as well as untold property damage due to the defective vehicles.
Toyota gas pedal recalls & floor mat recalls
Vehicle recalls for Lexus, Camry, Avalon, and Prius have all been issued due to unsafe parts such as stuck accelerator pedals and dangerous floor mats.
In accidents involving these types of vehicles, the 2007 Camry, which was recalled, was the subject of about 200 speed-control complaints. In all, federal safety regulators said they had received complaints alleging that unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles caused 34 deaths.
Toyota class action lawsuit
In the past, there have been several class action lawsuits as a result of auto defects, but none as far reaching as the automotive giant Toyota’s latest woes. Toyota has recalled about 9 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles since September 2009, and roughly 8.5 million of those vehicles were recalled due to problems with sudden acceleration, which the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) says have been involved in as many as 52 deaths. More than 400,000 additional Toyota Prius and Lexus HS250h vehicles have also been recalled due to brake problems.
The Toyota class action suits, which could represent as many as six million different Toyota owners, allege that the company misrepresented the value of its vehicles by concealing the accelerator problem from consumers and investors. The lawsuits claim the resale value of their Toyota and Lexus vehicles has substantially decreased, which is a key point since Toyota resale values are often used as a selling point of the company’s vehicles. If the company has to pay Toyota owners even as little as $500, the cost could quickly escalate into the billions.
