Avalon Floor Mat & Gas Pedal Recall

Owners of a Toyota Avalon made between 2005 and 2010 may have an issue with both their accelerator pedal and the floor mat on the drivers' side.  Each of these issues has been discovered to cause the accelerator pedal to stick in the full open or in a partially depressed state, preventing the car from stopping.  Each recall is being issued separately, but both can be fixed in one visit to a qualified mechanic.

At the current time, Toyota has suspended production of these models until the problem can be remedied.

The Avalon floor mat recall and the Avalon gas pedal recall are only two of the recent problems for the Japanese auto giant.

Other Toyota models such as Camry and Prius are also having parts recalled.

Toyota has been steadfast in saying the problem is strictly mechanical.  Company president and CEO Akio Toyoda assured Congress recently that Toyota research had not found a link between the reports of runaway acceleration and electronics.

Instead, the company is shortening gas pedals to prevent them from becoming lodged under floor mats and inserting metal pieces the size of a stamp to keep gas pedals from sticking in the depressed position.

The Obama administration is considering requiring all cars and trucks sold in the U.S. to have brakes that can override gas pedals to prevent sudden acceleration problems like those that led to reports of deaths and the recall of millions of Toyotas. Such brakes would require a relatively inexpensive software upgrade.
